May 9th, 2020 11:35am CST

Here at Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park™ at Mammoth Cave, we have been hard at work updating and enhancing all of our cleaning and sanitizing procedures, adjusting our recreation activities to comply with social distancing, and researching the best practices to take care of guests in this new operating environment.

Reopening May 15. The Governor’s order in late March did not order private campgrounds to close. We are regulated by the Health Department and the order confirmed that. Local Health Department officials confirmed that we can accept guests at any time as long as we meet the Ten Steps for Reopening Businesses in Kentucky, which we do. Accordingly, we will reopen for guests beginning Friday, May 15.

Please note that we will not be offering any activities the weekend of May 15. Because we are making so many changes to our procedures, we need a transition period before getting back up to speed. Activities will restart on Memorial Day weekend.

Emails and Phone Messages. There has been a tremendous increase in guest questions and requests since the onset of the COVID-19 issue and accordingly, we are behind on responding to many of your inquiries. We greatly appreciate your continued patience and understanding as we do our best to respond to all of our guests in as timely a manner as possible.

Pools, Beach, Wibit, and Playgrounds. The State of Kentucky has mandated that all swimming pools, splashpads, water slides, and swimming lakes (such as Karst Beach) must be closed at the present time and may not open until July at the earliest. Please watch our website and social media channels for updates regarding when our water amenities will be able to reopen.

Similarly, the state has mandated that all playgrounds must be closed at the present time and no projected reopening timeframe has been provided.

We hope we’ll be able to reopen our playgrounds, pools, and water play areas soon as the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines state that these areas can be open if operated properly with social distancing policies enforced. Details can be found on the CDC website at and

If you wish to share your displeasure regarding these closures with the State of Kentucky and request that we be allowed to operate them in accordance with CDC guidelines, please contact the following individuals:

Bathhouses. Currently, the only guidance the CDC or the State is providing regarding bathhouse and restroom cleaning during this pandemic is that they “should be cleaned and disinfected regularly.” As all other sanitization guidance recommends cleaning after a single touch and we cannot fully clean and sanitize each bathhouse/restroom after each use, all bathhouses are closed until further notice. Accordingly, for the time being, all guests must utilize the bathroom facilities in their cabins or camping units.

Water/Electric Campsites. If you have reserved a Water/Electric Only campsite between now and June 30 and have a self-contained camper, we will upgrade you to a full-hookup campsite at no additional cost. If you do not have access to a self-contained camper for your stay, we must reschedule your visit to later in the season as the Health Department will not permit us to utilize those campsites without an open bathhouse.

Primitive Campsites. If you have reserved a Primitive Area campsite between now and June 30, we must reschedule your visit for later in the season as the Health Department will not permit us to utilize those campsites without an open bathhouse.

Bear Den Cabins. If you have a Bear Den Cabin reserved between now and June 30, you must upgrade to a cabin with bathroom facilities or we must reschedule your visit for later in the season as the Health Department will not permit us to utilize those cabins without an open bathhouse.

Recreation. Due to the COVID-19 issue, several of our amenities are currently closed. That being said, we will be operating the pedal carts and the gem mining sluice and our two stocked ponds will be open for catch-and-release fishing. Additionally, our recreation team has developed a number of new activities which can be done while maintaining social distancing. To prepare yourself for some of those activities, please download Zoom ( and the campersAPP mobile app in the App Store or Google Play store before arriving. Both products are free.

Golf Carts. We will still offer golf carts for rent; however you must limit their usage to your family only. No ride sharing will be permitted at the present time.

Face Masks. We encourage the use of masks/face coverings by our guests and staff. The State of Kentucky requests everyone to wear face masks while in public or when entering public buildings. This applies to any and all park common areas and common buildings such as pavilions, the registration area, and the store. Please note that masks are not required at your campsite, in your cabin, or while you are taking a walk, riding your golf cart, or riding your bicycle. Please remember that the CDC cautions that cloth face coverings should not be placed on children younger than 2 years of age, anyone who has trouble breathing, or anyone who is unconscious, incapacitated, or otherwise unable to remove the cover without assistance. Our staff will be wearing masks whenever they may be in potential contact with guests.

Hand Sanitizer. Hand sanitizer will be available at a number of locations throughout the park. Frequent hand washing with soap and water is always encouraged.

Social Distancing. We need to manage a social distance of 6 feet (2 meters) between family units while still ensuring we all have a good time. Activities will frequently be based at your individual campsite or cabin and the number and location of picnic tables throughout the park will be adjusted to meet this objective.

Cleaning and Sanitization. We want to reduce touch areas whenever possible and sanitize “high touch” surfaces frequently. We have significantly enhanced the sanitizing procedures for our cabins and campsites. All touch surfaces including picnic tables, water hydrants, and power boxes (at campsites) will be sanitized in between guest stays. Our guiding principle is that if there is an area we cannot properly clean, it will be closed to the public.

Need to Reschedule? We greatly appreciate your patience and understanding regarding the unprecedented impact the pandemic is having on us. We know it is affecting you and your family as well.

The options that are available to guests who wish to alter their reservations are as follows:

  1. Reschedule your stay for a later date. Guests who do so can change their dates with no change or cancellation fees and we are currently offering a 10% discount to any guest taking advantage of this offer. If you would like to reschedule your stay, please reply to this email with the best contact phone number and a member of our team will reach out to you to adjust your reservation.
  2. Leave your deposit in your account as a “credit” toward any stay between now and December 31, 2021. Guests who take advantage of this offer will receive a 10% discount off the current posted rates or the posted rates in effect at the time their stay is rescheduled (whichever is lower). Please reply to this email with the best contact phone number and a member of our team will reach out to you to adjust your reservation.

We are reviewing and revising all cleaning procedures, implementing new sterilization procedures and new social distancing procedures. Essentially, a total reworking of our activities to encompass what can be done in this social distancing environment - in one sense it is a challenge, in another it is fun to be creating all new and different activities for everyone to be involved in and how to bring them into these activities without violating the social distancing rules that we will have in place. Family activities will be the rule. Some things that we have consider implementing is using Zoom across the campground, our outdoor PA system, the roving music on our hayride – we are testing our creative juices to the extreme for all of you. We are working with our Health Department and others professionals to determine what amenities we can open at present and which have to stay closed. Of those that we open, what new sanitation procedures and how frequently should they be applied.

We are working towards a reopening date of May 15th, the weekend before Memorial Day. This weekend would have no activities. It will be a soft opening to ensure all procedures are effective to keep our campers and employees safe. After this soft opening we will open full blast for Memorial Day weekend. Although amenities and activities may be a little different, we still plan to offer the same Jellystone Park Mammoth Cave hospitality.

All Americans are very aware that events have progressed rapidly regarding the impact of COVID-19 in our country. The Commonwealth of Kentucky continues to take the actions believed necessary to flatten the curve of the COVID-19 pandemic.

We will continue to do our part to keep our employees and campers safe.

Executive Orders:

On April 3rd, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear stated,

“There will be no overnight stays in our state parks. None in the campgrounds and none in the lodges. This is to make sure that we’re all healthy at home. It’s making sure that we’re not creating opportunities for people to create a crowd and we’re not presenting a haven for those coming from other places to potentially bring their contacts.”

We decided to voluntarily close the park to all campers on March 27th and considering the recent events we have extended our re-opening date from April 13th to May 1st, 2020.

Keeping it Normal--Saturday's at 10:30am CST:

Hello everyone,

As the coronavirus (COVID19) epidemic worsens, we all need to do our part to “flatten the curve” and slow its spread. Accordingly, we have decided to temporarily close Jellystone Park™ Mammoth Cave beginning on Friday, March 27. We currently plan to reopen on Monday, April 13th, but we will be constantly monitoring the situation and will delay this date if it looks to be advisable and in the interests of public health.

This is certainly not a decision we wanted to make or one that we are taking lightly but we feel that it is the socially responsible thing for us to do. Our priority is always the safety and well-being of guests such as you and your family, our employees, and our community.

We will continue to monitor the current situation and will provide you with updates via our website ( and our social media channels as they become available.

Thank you for your understanding and for your ongoing support of Jellystone Park™ Mammoth Cave. We look forward to hosting you and returning to “business as usual” as soon as possible.

Thank you,

Bill and Kay Pott

UPDATE Regarding Effects of COVID19 on Jellystone Park™ Mammoth Cave

Jellystone Park™ Mammoth Cave is still open for business with limited hours and amenities. We are following guidelines from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the State of Kentucky while remaining open to the public.

Per CDC guidelines, we ask that guests do not congregate in groups of 10 or more people and that guest’s practice “social distancing” by staying at least six feet away from other individuals as much as possible. We would also like to remind all guests to wash their hands often and when doing so, to utilize soap and hot water for at least 20 seconds. These actions will help protect the safety of all of us.

Additionally, Jellystone Park Mammoth Cave is taking the following steps in accordance with the best practices being shared by leading health and government agencies:

  • All playground equipment, including swings and slides, are being washed with a solution of at least 60% alcohol and/or hospital-grade Ecolab products daily.
  • Mini golf course equipment is being cleaned daily with a solution with at least 60% alcohol-based solution and/or hospital-grade Ecolab products.
    • We are utilizing a “clean” clubs bucket and a “dirty” clubs bucket to ensure different guests do not use the same clubs without them first being sanitized.
  • Surfaces within all available cabins are being cleaned with hospital grade disinfectant Ecolab products. We will also provide a 60% alcohol/40% water-based solution spray for any guests to keep and utilize in their cabin during their stay if desired.
  • All bathrooms are being checked and cleaned hourly using 60% alcohol-based solution and/or hospital grade Ecolab products.

Our office hours have changed to limit the amount of guest and employee traffic in various buildings. Hand sanitizer of at least 60% alcohol is available throughout the following buildings during all open hours:

  • The Ranger Station is open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. CST
    • Only one door is being unlocked each day for guest and employee usage.
    • We are cleaning all surfaces and door handles after each guest or employee enters or exits the building.
  • The Huckleberry Knob/Retail/Camp Store doors are closed, but guests who wish to make a purchase can enter through the Ranger Station door.

In an effort to be as transparent as possible, please be aware that a case of COVID-19 was confirmed in Warren County on March 18th, 2020. The Governor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, Andy Beshear, released that information that afternoon. Warren County is one of several counties that border Barren County, the county where Jellystone Park Mammoth Cave and Cave City reside. As of March 19th, 2020, there are no known case of COVID-19 in Barren County, KY.

We will provide additional information and updates as warranted. As always, thank you for your support of Jellystone Park Mammoth Cave.
